Burst pipe in Edgeley, locked out on Lancashire Hill or a dead fuse box in Offerton? PrimeFix247 Ltd takes emergency plumbing, locksmith, electrical, roof and broken glass calls right across Stockport, day and night.

Stockport grew where the Goyt and the Tame join to form the Mersey, and much of the town climbs steeply out of that valley. Hatting and then cotton brought fast growth in the 19th century, so Edgeley, Shaw Heath, Hillgate and Heaton Norris are lined with red-brick terraces, many on sloping streets with cellars and small back yards. Davenport and Offerton filled up with semis between the wars, and Brinnington was built as council housing in the 1950s and 1960s. For a plumber, the older terraces can mean lead or iron supply pipes and shared drains that carry hillside run-off. Their slate roofs, chimney stacks and cast-iron gutters take a beating in heavy rain. Plenty of these houses still have a timber front door and an elderly fuse board, while the newer flats near the centre depend on door entry systems.

Before we get to you in Stockport

Plumbing in Stockport

Turn the water off before anything else. In the older Stockport terraces the stopcock is usually under the kitchen sink, though where there is a cellar it can sit low on the front wall down there. Semis in Davenport and Offerton mostly have it under the sink or near the front door. Then open the cold taps to drain the pipes.

Locksmith in Stockport

Check every door and window you can reach without climbing or forcing anything. Many Hillgate and Edgeley terraces have a back gate onto an entry, so the yard door may be worth a try. Do not attack an old timber front door with a screwdriver, because the frame splits easily and that makes the repair bigger.

Electrical in Stockport

Look out of the window first. If the street lights and the house next door are dark as well, ring 105 to report the cut and get updates. If only your home is off, open the fuse box and see whether a switch has dropped. Older terraces may still have rewireable fuses, so leave those alone.

Roofing in Stockport

Put a bucket under the drip and move anything electrical out of the way. Stay off the roof, especially on the steep terraced streets where a ladder sits at an awkward angle. If the water is coming in near the chimney breast, note which room and which side, as that helps find the fault.

Glazing and boarding up in Stockport

Keep children and pets out of the room and pick up the big pieces of glass wearing thick gloves. Do not pull loose shards out of the frame by hand. A smashed ground-floor window or shop front near Merseyway or Great Underbank can be boarded up so the building is secure until new glass is made.

Questions people ask

How quickly can someone get to me in Stockport?

An engineer arrives within 60 minutes of your call, wherever you are in the town. The M60 and the A6 make it easy to reach Edgeley, Offerton, Brinnington and the streets around the viaduct. If something holds the engineer up on the way, you will get a call to let you know.

What does a call-out cost?

There is no call-out fee. It is £89 for the first hour, then £45 for each additional half hour, plus parts, the same at any time of day or night.

Can I call at night or on a Sunday in Stockport?

Yes. The line is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, bank holidays included, and a person answers rather than a machine. A pipe that bursts in Heaton Norris in the small hours gets the same response as one that goes at lunchtime on a weekday.

Why do Stockport terraces get blocked drains after heavy rain?

Many terraces in Edgeley, Hillgate and Portwood sit on steep ground and share old clay drains running behind the houses. A downpour washes silt and leaves down the slope, and tree roots can open up the joints. If the gully in your yard is overflowing, stop running water indoors and call.

Can a cellar door or back gate on a Stockport terrace be secured?

Yes. On older terraces the back gate and cellar door are often the weak points after a break-in, because they face a shared entry out of sight. A locksmith can fit a new lock or a temporary fix on the same visit, and will ask to see proof that you live there.
