Repaired by an electrician, not just an engineer

Most appliance repair firms send an appliance engineer. We send an electrician who repairs appliances. The difference matters more often than you would think. An oven that trips the board, a washing machine that shocks you at the door, a tumble dryer that smells hot, or a hob that half works can each be a fault in the appliance or a fault in the circuit feeding it. Our engineers can tell which, and fix either, in a single visit.

We repair washing machines, washer-dryers, tumble dryers, dishwashers, electric ovens, hobs and cooker hoods, fridges and freezers, and the electrical side of gas cookers. Integrated appliances in the apartments of Ancoats, the Northern Quarter and Salford Quays are a large part of the work, along with the freestanding machines in the kitchens of Didsbury, Chorlton and Sale.

02

Honest about repair or replace

A diagnostic visit ends with a plain recommendation. If the repair is worth doing, you get a price for parts and labour before anything is ordered. If it is not, we say so, charge only the diagnostic visit and leave you to buy a new machine without a sales pitch. Well-built machines under eight years old are nearly always worth repairing; cheap machines past that age often are not.

03

When the appliance is fine and the circuit is not

Sometimes the appliance is blameless. A cooker circuit with a loose connection at the isolator, a socket behind the washing machine that has been getting damp, or an RCD that has become oversensitive with age will all mimic an appliance fault. Because the engineer is an electrician, that is found and fixed on the same visit through our fault-finding work, and certified.

If an appliance is smoking, sparking or smells of burning, unplug it if you can do so safely, and treat it as an electrical emergency. Our guides on a burning smell from a socket and why your electrics keep tripping explain what those symptoms mean. Please do not open the consumer unit or attempt a repair on the circuit; call 07343 065023 instead. The main Manchester electrician page has everything else we do.

Landlords and letting agents

A tenant with a broken washing machine or a dead oven is a tenant who calls the agent daily. We take the call directly, attend within two working days, diagnose, and send the agent a repair-or-replace recommendation with a price the same day.

For portfolios in Fallowfield, Withington, Salford and the city centre, we can hold appliance records against each property and invoice monthly, so a repair is one email rather than a chain of them.

Appliance repair questions

01Is it worth repairing or should I replace the appliance?

Our rule of thumb is that a repair under half the cost of a comparable new appliance is worth doing on anything less than eight years old, and often on older, better-made machines. The engineer tells you the likely cost after diagnosis and before ordering parts, and if the honest answer is replace, we say so and charge only the diagnostic visit. We have no interest in selling you a new machine.

02My oven trips the electrics when it heats up. Is that the oven or the wiring?

Almost always the oven. A heating element that has cracked lets moisture in and leaks current to earth, which trips the RCD once the element warms up. It is a straightforward element replacement. Because our engineers are electricians, they check the cooker circuit and its connection at the same time, so that if the fault is on the wiring side it is found rather than blamed on the oven.

03Which brands do you repair?

All the mainstream brands sold in the UK, including the integrated appliances fitted in new-build apartments in Ancoats and the Northern Quarter. Parts for the common makes are carried on the van or available next day. For premium and unusual brands we can usually source parts within a few days and we tell you the lead time before you commit.

04Do you repair gas cookers and gas hobs?

The electrical side, yes: ignition, timers, fans and lights. Anything involving the gas supply, burners or valves must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and our plumbing and heating team includes them. If you are not sure which side the fault is on, describe it when you call and we will send the right person the first time.

05Can you come the same day?

Often, if the engineer is already in your part of Manchester. A washing machine full of water or a freezer that has stopped is prioritised. Ovens and dishwashers are usually booked within two working days. Where a part has to be ordered, the return visit is booked at the time so you are not waiting on us to call back.

Prime says

A tripping cooker or a dead oven is usually one element. Repair costs a fraction of replacing it.
