For your insurer
Six things that make a claim go through without argument.
- 01Photographs of the damage before anything is moved or cleared
- 02The crime reference number from the police, if it was a break-in
- 03Our make-safe invoice, which itemises the damage and the boarding
- 04A list of anything taken or damaged, written while it is fresh
- 05Do not dispose of the broken frame or glass until the insurer says so
- 06Receipts for anything you buy in the meantime, such as a temporary lock
Boarding up is what happens when a broken opening cannot be glazed on the spot: a shopfront pane that has to be made to order, a bay window in a 1930s Sale semi with three units gone, a door kicked through in a burglary, or a window that a storm has taken along with part of the frame. We fit 18mm plywood cut to size, screwed through to the frame or braced across the reveal so it cannot be levered off, and leave the property weathertight and secure. Call 07343 065023; a team is on the way within 60 minutes across Manchester and Greater Manchester.
After a break-in, the boarding is often the first thing the insurer needs to see done. Photograph everything before we start, get a crime reference from the police, and keep our invoice, which describes the damage and the make-safe work. Our guide to what to do after a break-in sets out the order, and a broken window at night covers the ten minutes before we arrive. If the door or lock has been forced, our locksmith attends with the boarding team.
When the replacement glass or frame is ready, we return and glaze at the daytime rate; see our emergency glazier page for reglazing on the night where a stock size fits. Out-of-hours rates are higher than daytime rates and are confirmed before dispatch. The glazing hub lists everything else we do.

Ask me anythingOn question 01On question 02On question 03On question 04On question 05On question 06On question 07On question 08On question 0901Is the line really answered at night, or is it a call centre?
It is answered by our own dispatch team, who know the engineers and the area. They can tell you what to do in the meantime and give you a real arrival time, not a script.
02How quickly will someone arrive?
Typically within sixty minutes in our twelve priority areas. Elsewhere across Greater Manchester and north Cheshire we tell you a realistic time on the phone. If we cannot meet a time we will say so, not promise and miss it.
03Does an out-of-hours callout cost more?
Yes. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays carry a higher rate than standard hours, and the pricing page says so plainly. What does not change is that you are told the figure before anyone is dispatched.
04What if it turns out not to be an emergency?
We will tell you on the phone if we think it can wait, and what the price difference is. The decision is yours. If you would still like someone tonight, we come.
05How is the boarding fixed?
With 18mm exterior plywood cut to the opening on site and screwed through to the frame, or braced across the reveal with timber battens where the frame itself is damaged. It cannot be levered off from outside without tools and noise. Fixings go into the frame or the reveal rather than the brickwork wherever possible, so there is nothing to make good when the glass goes in. Inside, the boarding is sealed against draughts and rain.
06How long can a property stay boarded?
Boarding is weathertight and secure for weeks if it has to be, which matters when a loss adjuster wants to inspect before repairs start or a made-to-measure unit is on order. It is not something to leave for months: it signals an empty property, and some insurers set a limit. We measure for the replacement glass on the same visit and, if you want, hold the order until the insurer has signed off.
07Can you board a commercial shopfront?
Yes, including large single panes and full-height frontages in the Northern Quarter, Didsbury village and Altrincham town centre. A two-person team attends with sheet material and lifting kit, and the boarding is fitted so you can trade behind it in the morning. Our shopfront and commercial glazing team then manufactures the replacement glass and fits it outside trading hours.
08Can you change the locks on the same visit?
Yes. After a break-in the door, frame and lock are often damaged as well as the glass, and our locksmith attends alongside the boarding team so the property is secured in one visit. Locks are changed or repaired, the door is realigned if it has been kicked, and the frame is made safe. Everything is itemised for the insurer on one invoice, and our guide to what to do after a break-in explains the steps.
09Is boarding cheaper than reglazing straight away?
On the night, usually, because the glass for most double glazed windows and all shopfronts has to be made to order, so boarding is the only option. Where a single pane or a stock size can be fitted immediately, our emergency glazier does that and you avoid a second visit. On the phone we ask about the window and tell you which is the cheaper route for your opening, and quote both if it is not clear.
