Put a container under the drip and move anything valuable out from beneath it. If the ceiling is bulging with water, pierce the bulge with a screwdriver over a bucket so it drains rather than bringing the plaster down. If water is near a light fitting or socket, switch that circuit off at the consumer unit if you can safely reach it and tell us when you call. Do not go on to the roof. We can stop the water in the rain. That usually means a temporary cover, a slate or tile hooked back into place, or a localised repair to the point of entry. A permanent repair to slate, tile, lead or a flat roof needs a dry surface, so the roofer makes the roof weather-tight on the emergency visit and books the permanent work at daytime rates for the next dry day.

Evening, weekend and bank holiday rates are different from daytime rates, and both are published on our pricing page. We confirm the callout charge and the likely cost of the temporary repair before a roofer is dispatched. If the leak can safely wait until the morning at daytime rates, we tell you that on the call rather than sending someone you did not need.

Call us and describe it. Water in a light fitting is an electrical hazard as well as a roofing problem, so switch off that circuit if you can safely reach the consumer unit and leave the fitting alone. We send the roofer to stop the water and, where the electrics are affected, one of our own emergency electricians to isolate, dry and test the circuit. One phone call, both trades.

Most buildings policies cover damage caused by a storm, which insurers define by wind speed or rainfall on the day, but not damage caused by wear and tear.
