What the switches on your consumer unit do

Hover or tap a device. This tells you what it protects, why it trips, and what is safe for you to reset.

Consumer unit

Safe to reset once

RCD

Residual current device. Trips when current leaks to earth, which is the kind of fault that gives shocks. Usually an appliance with a heating element, or moisture in an outside socket. Safe to reset once.

Main switch: Cuts everything. Safe to switch off if you smell burning or see water near the unit. If it will not stay on, do not force it: call.

RCD: Residual current device. Trips when current leaks to earth, which is the kind of fault that gives shocks. Usually an appliance with a heating element, or moisture in an outside socket. Safe to reset once.

Lighting circuit: A miniature circuit breaker for the lights on one floor. Trips on a short, often a failed lamp or a damaged fitting. Safe to reset once.

Sockets circuit: Breaker for the ring of sockets. Trips on overload (a heater and a dryer on one ring) or a short. Unplug everything on it, reset once, plug back in one at a time.

Cooker or shower: High-load circuits get their own breaker. A trip when the shower or oven starts is usually the appliance element failing.

Surge protection: Newer boards have a surge protective device. If its indicator has changed colour it has done its job once and needs replacing.

Resetting once is safe. Resetting again and again is how fires start. If it will not hold, stop and call.

Electricians who understand Manchester's housing

The wiring in a house tells you when it was last cared for. The Victorian terraces of Chorlton, Withington and Levenshulme were often rewired in the 1960s or 1970s and have been added to piecemeal ever since, with a spur here and a new kitchen circuit there. The 1930s semis of Didsbury, Sale and Cheadle frequently still carry a rewirable fuse board in the hall cupboard. The new-build apartments in Ancoats and the Northern Quarter are modern and well documented, but their appliances and consumer units are now reaching the age where faults begin.

Our electricians work across all of it. They trace faults rather than resetting them, replace fuse boards with metal-clad consumer units, rewire houses with the walls made good afterwards, inspect and report for landlords and buyers, and repair the appliances that keep a household running. Every piece of notifiable work is certified and registered with Building Control.

Planned work at planned rates

The emergency electrician page covers total power loss, burning smells and boards that will not reset, with an electrician on the way within 60 minutes. This page is for everything that can be booked. That includes fault finding and repairs, fuse boards and consumer units, rewiring, EICR reports for landlords and homebuyers, and appliance repair.

Daytime rates and out-of-hours rates are both published on our pricing page. They are not the same, and we would rather you knew that before you called than after. Whatever the hour, the price is confirmed before an electrician is dispatched.

The jobs we do most

In a typical week our electricians replace a rewirable fuse board in a Sale semi with a metal-clad consumer unit, trace an RCD trip in Chorlton to a damp outside light, produce EICRs for a letting agent's portfolio in Fallowfield and Withington, fit a dedicated circuit for a car charger in Hale, and replace the element in an oven in an Ancoats apartment. None of it is glamorous. All of it is tested, certified and written up so that the next electrician, or the next buyer, can see what was done and when.

Commercial customers, from cafes in the Northern Quarter to offices in Altrincham, get the same electricians and the same paperwork, with inspections done out of hours where a business cannot lose power in the day. Landlords and letting agents with several properties can see how we handle portfolios on our landlords page.

A word on safety

Electricity does not give second chances in the way a dripping tap does. If a socket smells of burning, if a circuit trips again as soon as it is reset, or if lights dim when an appliance starts, stop using the circuit and call 07343 065023. Please do not remove the cover of the consumer unit or attempt a repair inside it. Our guides on why your electrics keep tripping and a burning smell from a socket explain what the symptoms usually mean and when to stop and call.

How we work

Tracing a fault, in order

Testing, not guessing. This is why we can give you a written result.

  1. 01

    Isolate

Circuits are switched off one at a time so the fault can be narrowed to one of them without anyone touching a live conductor.

  2. 02

    Test

Insulation resistance and earth leakage tests on the suspect circuit tell us which cable or accessory is failing and how badly.

  3. 03

    Trace

A junction box in the loft, a screw through a cable, a socket with a loose terminal. We find it and show you.

  4. 04

    Certify

Repaired, retested and written up. You get the certificate your insurer or landlord needs.

Landlords, agents and homebuyers

Landlords in England must hold a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report for every let property and renew it at least every five years. We inspect, report in plain English, price any remedial work as a fixed figure and return to do it, then issue the paperwork the council or agent needs.

For buyers, an EICR before exchange on a Victorian terrace or a 1930s semi is the cheapest insurance against a five-figure rewire you did not budget for. Our guide on what an EICR covers explains what the codes mean.

01Are your electricians qualified and registered?

Yes. Our electricians hold the current wiring regulations qualification and work under a competent person scheme, which means notifiable work such as a new consumer unit or a rewire is certified and registered with Building Control without you having to apply separately. You receive the certificate by email, and the registration is on record if you sell the house or your insurer asks.

02Do you cover both homes and small businesses?

Yes. Most of our work is in homes across Manchester and Greater Manchester, but we also look after shops, cafes, offices and small workshops from the Northern Quarter to Altrincham, including periodic inspections and the remedial work that follows. Landlords and letting agents with several properties can see how we handle portfolios on our commercial pages.

03How soon can you come for planned work?

Fault finding and small repairs are usually booked within two working days, often sooner if an electrician is already in your area. Consumer unit replacements are booked within a week. Rewires are planned around you and typically start within two to three weeks of the survey. For anything that cannot wait, the emergency electrician is available around the clock.

04Can I fix a small electrical fault myself?

Changing a bulb or resetting a tripped switch once is fine. Anything beyond that, and anything at all inside the consumer unit, should be left to an electrician. Faults that trip repeatedly, sockets that are warm or discoloured, and any burning smell are signs of a problem that needs tracing, not resetting. Our guides explain what the symptoms mean, and the safe next step is always to call us.

05Which parts of Greater Manchester do you cover?

All of Manchester, plus Trafford, Stockport, Salford and Bury, and Wilmslow in Cheshire. We are busiest in Didsbury, Chorlton, Sale, Altrincham, Hale, Prestwich, Worsley, Cheadle and Heaton Moor, and in the apartment blocks of Ancoats and the Northern Quarter. Each area has its own page with the electricians who cover it and realistic travel times from our base.
