Repair first, replace when it is honest to

Most double glazing faults are a component, not the window. A dropped door is a hinge or a packer. A handle that spins is a spindle or a gearbox. A draught is a seal or an adjustment. A cracked pane is one unit, not a new frame. Window companies tend to quote a new window because that is what they sell; we carry the hinges, handles, gearboxes, gaskets and packers for the systems fitted across Greater Manchester and repair them at the daytime rate. Call 07343 065023 or book a visit.

What we repair

uPVC windows and doors from the 1990s onward, which is most of Prestwich, Cheadle, Worsley and the newer streets of Sale: friction hinges that have dropped so the sash catches, espagnolette locks that no longer throw, handles that have snapped, gaskets that have shrunk and let the draught in, and trickle vents that have jammed. Aluminium windows and doors in the apartment blocks of Ancoats and Salford Quays, where sliding doors run off their rollers and heavy sashes wear their hinges. Timber sashes and casements in the Victorian terraces of Chorlton and the semis of Didsbury, where cords, pulleys, beads and putty need a joiner's eye as much as a glazier's. Composite and uPVC front doors that have dropped in the heat and no longer lock, which our locksmith team also attends.

Cracked, chipped or shattered panes are replaced as a unit into the existing frame, toughened or laminated where the regulations require. Condensation between the panes is a failed sealed unit rather than a repairable fault; our guide to misted double glazing explained covers why it happens and our misted and failed units page covers replacing them.

When a window is past repairing

Occasionally it is. A uPVC frame that has gone brittle, a timber frame rotten at the cill, or an aluminium frame with a broken thermal break will not hold a repair, and we say so rather than take your money twice. You get the repair price and a replacement quotation side by side. If the glass is broken and the opening is open to the weather now, that is a job for our emergency glazier, and a broken window at night covers what to do first. Everything else is on the glazing hub.

Parts on the van

Friction hinges in the common sizes, espagnolette gearboxes, cockspur and inline handles, shootbolts, keeps, gaskets in the usual profiles, patio door rollers and packers. Most repairs are finished on the first visit. Where a part is specific to an older or less common system, we identify it from the profile and return with it, and the price for the return visit is stated before we leave.

01Can you repair my window rather than replace it?

In most cases, yes. Hinges, handles, locking gearboxes, gaskets, packers, rollers and sash cords are all replaceable parts, and we carry the common ones for the uPVC, aluminium and timber systems fitted across Greater Manchester. A window needs replacing only when the frame itself has failed. If that is the case we say so and give you the repair price and a replacement quotation together, so you are not paying twice.

02My uPVC door has dropped and will not lock. Can it be fixed?

Almost always. Doors drop when the hinges wear or the glass or panel was never packed to carry the weight, and in hot weather the sash swells enough to jam the lock. We adjust or replace the hinges, re-pack the panel or unit so the door hangs square, and adjust the keeps so the lock throws cleanly. If the multipoint gearbox has failed, our uPVC door lock repair team replaces it on the same visit.

03Do you repair windows fitted by other companies?

Yes. Most of what we repair was fitted by someone else, often a company that no longer trades. Hardware for the major uPVC and aluminium systems is standardised enough that we can match hinges, handles and gearboxes from the profile and a photograph, and for the rest we identify the part on the first visit and return with it. Bring the original paperwork if you have it; it can save time.

04Can you replace just one pane?

Yes. A cracked or shattered pane is replaced as a new sealed unit into the existing frame, in the same thickness so the beads and gaskets go back as they were, and toughened or laminated where its position requires safety glass. Nothing is done to the frame, the plaster or the decoration. If the glass has gone and the opening is open to the weather now, our emergency glazier attends around the clock.

05Why is my double glazing draughty?

Usually the gaskets have shrunk or hardened, the sash has dropped so it no longer compresses the seal evenly, or the locking keeps have worn so the window does not pull tight. Occasionally it is a trickle vent left open or a failed seal around the frame itself. Each of these is an adjustment or a replacement part, not a new window, and it is one of the cheapest repairs we do for the difference it makes.

Most 'new windows' quotes are really a hinge, a handle or a unit. Ask us before you replace a frame.
