Most uPVC door faults are cheaper than they feel

A uPVC door that will not lock feels like a big problem, because the whole house is open until it is fixed. In practice the cause is usually one of four things: the door has dropped out of alignment, the gearbox in the multipoint strip has worn out, the cylinder has failed, or the handle springs have gone. All four are repairs, not replacements, and our locksmiths carry the parts to do them on the first visit.

The 1930s semis of Didsbury, Sale and Cheadle were mostly refitted with uPVC doors in the 1990s and 2000s, and those doors are now at the age where gearboxes fail. Newer composite doors on the estates around Worsley and Prestwich fail in the same way, only later. Our guide on why a uPVC door will not lock explains what the symptoms mean if you want to understand it before you call.

Realignment before replacement

The most common visit is a door that only locks if you lift the handle with force. That is alignment, not the lock. The door has dropped on its hinges and the hooks no longer meet the keeps, so every lift puts strain on the gearbox until it breaks. Adjusting the hinges and keeps takes half an hour and can add years to the mechanism. We would rather do that than sell you a strip you did not need.

When the mechanism has genuinely failed

A floppy handle, a key that turns freely, or a door that locked yesterday and will not today usually means the gearbox has gone. We identify the brand, fit the matching gearbox and test the door through its full travel. Where the strip is an obsolete pattern we fit a full replacement, and we take the opportunity to check the cylinder. A basic cylinder on an otherwise sound door is worth upgrading to a three-star anti-snap unit while the strip is out, which is covered on our security upgrades page. If keys are the issue rather than the mechanism, see lock changes and rekeying.

If a snapped cylinder has left you outside, that is an emergency and our 24-hour locksmith will come now. Read being locked out at night while you wait. For everything else our Manchester locksmiths do, see the main page or call 07343 065023.

Symptoms we repair

If your door is doing any of these, it is a repair rather than a replacement.

Alignment, gearbox, cylinder, handle. One of four, nearly always.

Hinges and keeps first. A new part only if needed.

Locked from both sides until it does it smoothly.

What was wrong, what to watch, whether the cylinder is worth upgrading.

How a repair visit runs

Usually under an hour, and usually one visit.

Why doors drop

A uPVC door panel is heavy, and it hangs on two or three hinges screwed into a plastic frame with steel reinforcement inside. Over ten or fifteen years the hinges settle, the reinforcement shifts slightly and the sealed unit inside the door can slip in its packers. The door drops by a few millimetres, which is enough to take the hooks out of line with the keeps.

Houses on clay, which covers much of south Manchester from Chorlton to Cheadle, move seasonally as well, and a door that locks smoothly in winter can bind in a dry summer. Realignment, not replacement, is the fix in almost every case.

01My uPVC door only locks if I lift the handle hard. Is that a lock fault?

Almost always it is an alignment fault rather than the lock. The door has dropped on its hinges, or the frame has moved slightly, so the hooks and rollers no longer line up with the keeps. Forcing the handle up bends the gearbox over time. A realignment visit adjusts the hinges and keeps so the door locks with a light lift, and it usually saves the mechanism before it fails.

02The handle is floppy and the door will not lock at all. What has happened?

The gearbox in the centre of the multipoint strip has failed. It is the small cassette that the handle and cylinder drive, and it is the part that wears first. We carry gearboxes for the common brands, so the repair is normally done on the first visit without replacing the whole strip. If the door is currently unlocked and you cannot secure it, tell us when you call and we will prioritise the visit.

03Do I need a whole new door?

Very rarely. A dropped door, a failed gearbox, a snapped cylinder or a worn handle are all repairs. A new door is only sensible when the frame itself has failed, the panel is cracked, or the mechanism is an obsolete pattern no longer made. If that is the case we say so and point you to our windows and doors team rather than patching something that will not last.

04Can you fix composite and aluminium doors as well?

Yes. Composite doors use the same multipoint strips and euro cylinders as uPVC, so the repairs are identical. Aluminium doors, common on the newer apartments in Ancoats and on bi-fold and patio doors in Hale and Bowdon, use slightly different hardware, and our locksmiths carry the common patterns. Patio and bi-fold doors that have dropped are adjusted in the same way.

05How long does a uPVC door lock repair take?

A realignment takes around half an hour. A gearbox or cylinder replacement takes about the same once the part is identified. A full multipoint strip replacement takes an hour or so. Most jobs are finished in a single visit because the van carries the common parts. If a strip has to be ordered for an unusual door we make it secure in the meantime and return when it arrives.

Prime says

If the handle has to be lifted hard before the key turns, the gearbox is going. Fix it before it fails shut.
