Electrical Fault Finding and Repairs in Manchester
Tripping circuits, dead sockets, flickering lights and the faults that come and go. Traced to the cause and repaired, not reset and hoped for.
- Tested, not guessed
- Certificate with every repair
- Cap agreed for elusive faults
Fault isolatedThe difference between resetting a fault and fixing it
A circuit that trips is telling you something. Resetting it makes the lights come back on; it does not make the cause go away. Our electricians treat a repeated trip, a dead socket or a flickering light as a diagnosis problem. They isolate, test, narrow down and repair, and they leave you with a certificate and a plain explanation of what was wrong.
This page covers planned fault finding at daytime rates. If there is a burning smell, scorching, sparks, or a circuit that trips the instant it is reset, that is an electrical emergency and you should call 07343 065023 now rather than book.
What we see most in Manchester homes
In the Victorian terraces of Chorlton, Withington and Prestwich, the usual culprit is a lighting circuit that has been extended over decades and now has a loose connection in a ceiling rose or a junction box under the floor. In the 1930s semis of Didsbury, Sale and Cheadle it is often an outside light or a garden socket letting damp in and tripping the RCD every time it rains. In the apartments of Ancoats and the Northern Quarter, the fault is more often an appliance, typically an oven element or a washing machine heater, dragging a shared RCD down with it. Our appliance repair service covers that side.
How the visit runs
The electrician starts with what you have noticed: which circuits, what time of day, whether it is worse in wet weather, what was switched on. That narrows the search before a single test is made. Then the circuit is isolated and tested, section by section, until the readings show where the fault is. Repairs are made from van stock, the circuit is retested and certified, and if the readings suggest a wider problem with the installation you are told plainly what it is.
Our guides on why your electrics keep tripping and a burning smell from a socket explain the symptoms in more depth. Please do not open the consumer unit or work inside it yourself; the safe step is always to switch off what you can and call. Everything else our Manchester electricians do is on the main page.
How fault finding works
Testing, not guessing.
- Stage 1
Listen
Which circuits, when it happens, what was on, whether weather makes a difference. Most faults are half found before the tester comes out.
- Stage 2
Isolate and test
The circuit is safely isolated and tested section by section. Insulation resistance and continuity readings show where the fault lies.
- Stage 3
Repair
Loose connections remade, damaged cable replaced, failed accessories swapped from van stock.
- Stage 4
Retest and certify
The circuit is retested, restored, and a Minor Works Certificate issued. If the wider installation is in poor condition, you are told.

A trip that keeps tripping is a fault talking to you. We find it properly, not by resetting it.
Faults we trace and repair
If you recognise any of these, it is a fault-finding visit rather than an emergency, unless there is a smell of burning.
- 01RCD or breaker that trips at random, or every time it rains
- 02A ring of sockets that has gone dead with the breaker still on
- 03Lights that flicker, buzz or dim when an appliance starts
- 04A socket or switch that is warm, discoloured or crackles
- 05An outside light or garden socket that trips the board
- 06A cooker, shower or immersion heater that trips its own circuit
- 07Extension leads and adaptors doing the job of a missing socket
- 08A fault an insurer or surveyor has asked to be investigated
When the fault is the fuse board itself
Some faults are not on a circuit at all. A rewirable fuse board from the 1960s, or an early plastic consumer unit with a single RCD covering the whole house, cannot separate a wet outside light from the freezer and the lights. One small leak to earth and everything goes off.
If that is what the testing shows, a modern consumer unit with an RCBO on each circuit is the real fix: one fault trips one circuit, and the rest of the house stays on.

Ask me anythingQuestion 01 of 05Question 02 of 05Question 03 of 05Question 04 of 05Question 05 of 0501Why does my RCD keep tripping?
An RCD trips when it detects current leaking to earth, which usually means moisture in an outside socket or light, a failing appliance element such as an oven or immersion heater, or damaged cable insulation. It is doing its job. Resetting it once is reasonable; if it trips again, leave it off and call us. Our guide on why your electrics keep tripping explains the common causes in more detail.
02How do you find an intermittent fault?
By testing rather than guessing. The electrician isolates the circuit, measures insulation resistance and earth continuity on each section, and disconnects loads one at a time until the reading changes. Intermittent faults are often a loose neutral in a junction box, a nail through a cable, or a damp outside fitting, and the test readings point to which. It takes longer than a reset, and it is the only way to actually fix it.
03Half the sockets in the house have stopped working. Is that serious?
It can be. A whole ring going dead usually means a breaker has tripped, but if the breaker is on and the sockets are still dead, a connection has failed somewhere on the circuit, and a failed connection can overheat. Do not keep resetting, and do not use extension leads from a working circuit as a long-term fix. Book a fault-finding visit, or call the emergency line if there is any smell of burning.
04Will you certify the repair?
Yes. Every repair is tested afterwards and you receive a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for the circuit worked on. If the fault finding shows that the installation as a whole is in poor condition, we say so and explain the options, which is usually a consumer unit replacement or, for older properties, a rewire. We do not recommend either unless the readings justify it.
05How much does fault finding cost?
It is charged by time at the daytime hourly rate, with the first hour including the initial testing. Most faults are found and repaired within one to two hours. Where a fault is genuinely elusive we agree a cap with you before continuing rather than running up hours. The rates are on our pricing page, and the price is confirmed on the phone before the visit is booked.
