Shower Repair and Bathroom Plumbing in Manchester

Showers that run cold, leaking baths, low pressure, faulty thermostatic valves and like-for-like toilet or basin replacements. Repair work booked this week, not a refit.

Repairs to the bathroom you already have

This page is for repairs. A shower that has stopped working or runs cold, a bath that leaks into the room below, a basin with no pressure, a thermostatic valve that will not hold its temperature, or a toilet or basin that needs replacing like for like. It is work that takes a few hours, is booked this week and is priced by the job. Call 07343 065023 or book a visit.

Looking for a full refit instead? If you want the bathroom stripped out, re-laid, tiled and redesigned, that is a different team and a different page. See bathroom renovation, which covers design, layout, waterproofing and project management for complete refits.

Showers

Mixer showers in Manchester homes fail in predictable ways. The thermostatic cartridge wears or sticks and stops regulating, so the shower goes hot and cold as someone runs a tap elsewhere. Flow drops because the inlet filters are blocked. The diverter sticks between bath and shower. Electric showers trip the circuit, dribble or stop heating when the element or pressure switch fails, and we replace units on the same visit where the model is a straightforward swap. Power showers and pumps in the larger houses of Hale and Bowdon lose pressure when the pump is airlocked or the impeller has worn.

If the shower runs cold and so does every other hot tap, the fault is the boiler, not the shower. Our guide to why your boiler has no hot water explains the checks, and our boiler and hot water team takes it from there.

03

Baths, basins and toilets

A bath that leaks only when someone is in it is nearly always the sealant or the overflow, not the pipework; the weight flexes the tub and opens the joint. We reseal properly, with the bath filled so the joint is made under load. Basin wastes, traps and tap connections weep quietly under vanity units until the chipboard swells. Toilets and basins that are cracked, discontinued or simply tired are replaced like for like, usually in a morning, without touching the tiling. A tap that only drips is a smaller job; see taps and toilets, or try our guide to how to stop a leaking tap first.

04

What it costs

Every repair is priced before the plumber starts. Most shower repairs are a cartridge, a filter clean or an electric unit swap, and the pricing page has the daytime rates. Everything else the plumbing team does is on the plumbing hub.

01Do you do complete bathroom refits?

Not from this page. This service is for repairing and replacing individual items in the bathroom you already have, booked within the week and priced by the job. If you want the room stripped out and redesigned, with new tiling, waterproofing and layout, that is a project handled by a different team over several weeks. See bathroom renovation for that, and come back here when something in the new bathroom needs fixing.

02Why does my shower go hot and cold?

In a mixer shower it is almost always the thermostatic cartridge, which wears or sticks and stops compensating when someone runs a tap elsewhere. In an electric shower it can be a failing pressure switch or a blocked inlet filter. If every hot tap in the house is doing the same, the fault is at the boiler or cylinder rather than the shower, and our guide to why your boiler has no hot water covers that.

03Can you repair an electric shower?

Sometimes, and we will say honestly when it is not worth it. Blocked filters, failed pressure switches and stuck solenoids can be replaced on some models. When the heater tank has failed, or the unit is more than about eight years old, a like-for-like replacement is cheaper than the part and the labour, and we carry common units. The electrical supply is checked at the same time so the new shower is safe and properly rated.

04My bath only leaks when someone is in it. Why?

Because the weight of a person and the water flexes the bath, opening a joint that looks sealed when it is empty. The usual culprits are the sealant along the wall, the overflow gasket and the waste. We reseal with the bath filled so the joint is made under load, and replace the waste and overflow seals while the panel is off. A leak that appears with the bath empty is more likely to be the supply pipework or the taps.

05Can you improve low shower pressure?

Usually. First we find out why: a blocked filter or scaled shower head, a partly closed isolation valve, a gravity-fed system with the tank too low, or a combination boiler struggling with two outlets at once. The cheap fixes come first. Where the system genuinely cannot deliver more, we explain the options, from a shower pump on a tank-fed system to a different type of shower, with prices for each.

06How soon can you come?

Most shower and bathroom repairs are booked within the week, often within two working days, at the standard daytime rate. If water is coming through the ceiling below the bathroom and you cannot stop it, that is an emergency; isolate the supply if you can and call 07343 065023 for our emergency plumber, who attends within 60 minutes around the clock.
