Tap and Toilet Repairs in Manchester
Dripping taps, running cisterns, stiff valves and toilets that will not flush, fixed or replaced in one visit by a plumber who carries the parts.
- Parts on the van
- Standard daytime rate
- Fixed in one visit
A dripping tap or a toilet that runs all night is not an emergency, but it is the sort of job that gets put off for months and then costs more than it should. We book these as daytime visits at the standard rate, send a plumber with the common cartridges, washers, valves and cistern internals on the van, and aim to leave with it fixed rather than with a list of parts to order. Call 07343 065023 or book online.
Taps
Most modern mixer taps in Manchester kitchens and bathrooms use a ceramic disc cartridge, and when one starts to drip or the lever goes stiff, the cartridge is the fix. Older traditional taps in the Victorian terraces of Chorlton and the 1930s semis of Didsbury use rubber washers and reseatable valve seats, which we carry too. If you want to try it yourself first, our guide to how to stop a leaking tap walks through isolating the supply and changing a washer. Where a tap is corroded through, a discontinued design or simply worn out, we say so and price a replacement. We can fit taps you have bought yourself, provided they suit the pressure in your property.
A hot tap that runs cold or loses pressure is often not the tap at all but the boiler or cylinder behind it. Our guide to why your boiler has no hot water explains the checks, and our boiler and hot water team handles the rest.
Toilets
A cistern that keeps filling is usually a worn fill valve or a flush valve seal, both cheap parts and a short job. A weak flush in a close-coupled toilet is often a flush valve that has dropped or scale under the rim. A toilet that rocks on the floor, a cracked pan or a leaking pan connector is a replacement, and we can supply and fit a new close-coupled or back-to-wall toilet in the same visit. Concealed cisterns behind tiled walls in Ancoats apartments need a little more care, and we work through the access panel rather than the tiles.
If a toilet is overflowing and will not stop, turn the isolation valve on the supply pipe a quarter turn and call our emergency plumber. Everything else the plumbing team does is on the plumbing hub.

Repair or replace: how we decide
We repair when the body of the tap or toilet is sound and the part is available, which is most of the time. We recommend replacing when the fitting is corroded, the design is discontinued, or the repair would cost more than half of a new one. Either way you hear the two prices side by side before anything is touched, and we are happy to fit fittings you have chosen yourself.

Ask me anythingQuestion 01 of 05Question 02 of 05Question 03 of 05Question 04 of 05Question 05 of 0501Can a dripping tap be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Usually repaired. Modern mixer taps use a ceramic cartridge and older taps use a washer and seat, and we carry both. A tap is replaced when the body is corroded, the design is discontinued so no cartridge fits, or the repair would cost more than half the price of a new one. We tell you which before starting, and if you want to try the washer yourself first, our guide to how to stop a leaking tap shows how.
02Why does my toilet keep running after it flushes?
Either the fill valve is not shutting off, so water rises to the overflow and trickles into the pan, or the flush valve seal has worn and lets water through from the cistern. Both are inexpensive parts and a short job. If the cistern is a concealed one behind a tiled wall, as in many Ancoats and Northern Quarter apartments, we work through the flush plate or access panel rather than disturbing the tiles.
03Can you replace a toilet on the same visit?
Yes, where it is a like-for-like swap of a standard close-coupled or back-to-wall toilet. We carry a small stock of common pans and cisterns and can collect a specific model on the way. A cracked pan, a toilet that rocks on its base or a leaking pan connector are usually replacements rather than repairs. Anything that involves moving the soil pipe or changing the layout belongs with a refit rather than a repair visit.
04Will you fit taps or a toilet I have bought myself?
Yes, provided they suit the property. Some designer taps need higher pressure than a gravity-fed system in a 1930s semi can deliver, and some toilets sold online have outlets that do not line up with a British soil pipe without an adaptor. Send us the model or a link before the visit and we will tell you whether it will work, and what we would charge to fit it. Fitting-only work is priced on the pricing page.
05How much does a dripping tap cost me?
A steady drip runs to thousands of litres a year, which on a water meter is money, and a hot tap that drips is also paying to heat that water. More importantly, the constant moisture stains the basin, corrodes the waste and, in a kitchen, can rot the cupboard base below. It is one of the cheapest plumbing jobs there is and one of the easiest to keep putting off.
