  6. 06Someone has received an electric shock from an appliance or fitting

Emergency line: Call 07343 065023Whatever you tick, leave the consumer unit cover on.

Some electrical problems are an inconvenience. Others are the early stage of a fire. A burning smell from a socket, a fuse board that hums or feels warm, sparks when a plug goes in, or a circuit that trips the instant it is reset all belong in the second group. So does a total loss of power when the rest of the street still has lights, and any water reaching electrics after a leak.

Our electricians are on shifts through the night, and we aim to be with you within 60 minutes across Manchester and the closer parts of Greater Manchester, including Didsbury, Chorlton, Prestwich, Sale and Altrincham. Further out we give you an honest time rather than a hopeful one.

The process

What happens when you call

Four steps, no surprises.

  1. Step 1

    You describe the fault

A person answers, asks what you can see, hear and smell, and tells you whether to switch off at the main switch and wait outside.

  2. Step 2

    Price confirmed

You are told the callout charge and the likely cost of parts before an electrician is sent. Network outages are identified on the call at no charge.

  3. Step 3

    Electrician arrives

Within 60 minutes across most of Manchester, in a marked van, with ID. The circuit is isolated and the fault traced.

  4. Step 4

    Made safe and repaired

Repaired from van stock where possible. Where a larger job is needed, the essentials are left working and the follow-up booked at daytime rates.

What we do and what we ask you not to do

On arrival the electrician isolates the affected circuit, traces the fault and makes the installation safe. Most emergencies are repaired on the spot from van stock. Where the safe answer is a larger job, such as replacing an old fuse board, we leave you with the essential circuits working and book the consumer unit replacement at daytime rates.

While you wait, switch off at the main switch if you can reach it safely, and leave the consumer unit cover in place. We will never ask you to open it or work inside it. Our guides on a burning smell from a socket and why your electrics keep tripping explain what the symptoms mean; the safe action in every case is to stop and call.

For faults that can wait until morning, our fault finding and repairs service is booked at daytime rates, and the main Manchester electrician page lists everything else we do.

01Is the line really answered at night, or is it a call centre?

It is answered by our own dispatch team, who know the engineers and the area. They can tell you what to do in the meantime and give you a real arrival time, not a script.

02How quickly will someone arrive?

Typically within sixty minutes in our twelve priority areas. Elsewhere across Greater Manchester and north Cheshire we tell you a realistic time on the phone. If we cannot meet a time we will say so, not promise and miss it.

03Does an out-of-hours callout cost more?

Yes. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays carry a higher rate than standard hours, and the pricing page says so plainly. What does not change is that you are told the figure before anyone is dispatched.

04What if it turns out not to be an emergency?

We will tell you on the phone if we think it can wait, and what the price difference is. The decision is yours. If you would still like someone tonight, we come.

05What should I do while I wait for the electrician?

If there is smoke or flame, leave the property and call 999 before you call us. Otherwise, if you can safely reach the main switch on the consumer unit, switch it off and leave everything else alone. Do not remove any cover, and do not try to reset a switch that has already tripped more than once. Keep the area clear and have the electrician's arrival time to hand.

06The power is off. Is it my house or the whole street?

Look outside. If the neighbours and the street lights are dark too, it is a network fault and the electricity distributor for the North West will restore it; their emergency number is printed on your bill and there is no charge. If yours is the only dark house, or only some circuits are off, the fault is inside the property and that is what we come out for.

07Is an emergency electrician more expensive at night?

Evening, weekend and bank holiday rates are different from daytime rates and both are published on our pricing page. We confirm the callout charge and the likely cost of any parts before an electrician is dispatched, so the figure on the invoice matches what you agreed on the phone. If the fault turns out to be a network outage, we tell you on the call and do not send anyone.

08Can you fix it on the first visit?

Usually. Our vans carry RCDs, RCBOs, breakers, sockets, switches, cable and the common accessories, so most faults are traced and repaired in a single visit. If a fault needs a part we do not carry, or the safe answer is a new consumer unit, we make the installation safe on the night and book the follow-up at daytime rates through our fuse boards and consumer units service.

09What counts as an electrical emergency?

Any burning smell, scorching or sparks from a socket, switch or the fuse board. Any loss of power that is not a network outage. A circuit that trips immediately every time it is reset. Water reaching electrics after a leak. Anything that has given someone a shock. If you are unsure, call and describe it; if it can wait until morning at daytime rates we will say so rather than send an electrician you did not need.
